Good to know

Why a dedicated home charger

A standard three-pin plug can be used occasionally, but it’s slow and isn’t designed for regular EV charging. A properly installed charger gives you much faster charging, better electrical safety, less risk of overheating and long-term reliability for daily use.

What we check before installing

Most EV charging happens at home, so your charger has to work safely with your existing electrics. We assess where the charger and car will go, the capacity of your supply, whether load management is needed, and any permissions needed for rented or leasehold homes.

Tethered or untethered

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, which is convenient day to day. An untethered charger uses a separate Type 2 cable, which gives flexibility if you change car. We’ll advise on the better option for you.

Load monitoring

Where needed, we fit load monitoring so the car charges without exceeding the capacity of your main supply, even when other appliances are in use. This prevents nuisance tripping and blown main fuses.

Connectors, solar and smart charging

Most EVs in the UK use the Type 2 connector, which is now the national standard. If your home has solar panels, we can fit a charger that diverts surplus solar energy into your car. New home chargers are smart chargers, so you can schedule off-peak charging, monitor energy use and control the charger from an app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission to install an EV charger?

Most home installations fall under permitted development. If the property is rented or leasehold, you may need consent from the landlord or freeholder.

Will my consumer unit need upgrading?

Some homes need an upgrade to support EV charging safely. We identify this at the survey and discuss it before any work is agreed.

Can I have a charger without a driveway?

You'll normally need off-street parking, as running a cable across the pavement isn't a safe option. We can look at what's possible at your property.

How long does installation take?

Most standard installations are completed in around half a day. More complex jobs, such as long cable runs or supply upgrades, take longer.

What are your payment terms?

A 50% deposit is needed at least 48 hours before installation, with the balance due once the charger is installed and working.
